When should one overcall a four card major? One idea, propounded by Mike Lawrence, is when holding length in the opponent's minor. The rationale is that partner will have fewer cards in that minor, hence more likely to hold support for any suit you push forward. Not an infallible result, but the results are usually worth following Lawrence's advice. Here, South has only four cards in diamonds, but the opening lead seems likely to be helpful -- into the AQJ9 -- and even if North cannot support hearts, the lead directional value makes the bid worthwhile.

The 1 overcall works like a charm, eliciting support and obtaining the par/maximum result.

The spade barrage almost worked, but South has just too much value to pass and too few hearts to ignore the good club suit.

The bidding shown won't often be duplicated -- West won't always bid and North won't always make a Negative Double even when West does not pass. But the ideas are reasonable.

Deep Finesse finds 4 EW, but that is most unlikely -- East will like his hearts too much to bid anything else, and might be pushed into the disastrous 4 doubled -- the vulnerability is just wrong to be taking a flier/sacrifice over a part score.

Plus 200 will be a tie for top for NS among a very few pairs.

Plus 140 NS will be common.

Plus 130 EW will be rare, indeed.

  1. DONT

Even at equal and vulnerable, South's hand seems worthy of an annoyance bid (oh, if only the Q were the Q rather than the 6! -- but you have what you have).

For those who play such devices as "stolen bid" doubles, a/k/a "mirror doubles," or even Negative Double , don't you wish you were playing penalty doubles today? Plus 500 would be a rather easy top.

This may turn out to be one of those hands where too much competition pushes the opponents into a makeable game -- If NS keep bidding clubs to the four level, surely East will take the push? South has lots of offense, little defense, and might consider the effect of bidding too much.

Or does East think highly enough of his club void and good suit to overlook the weak spades and suspect diamonds? The reasons that game makes are (1) spades are blockaded for the defense (2) the diamond finesse works. It is, however, true that only one of those -- likely the diamond finesse -- is necessary for ten tricks.

Well, you pay your money and you take your chance. Surely about half the field will be in a heart game, and even some NS pairs will sacrifice over that.

Perhaps South should preempt 3 and see what fruit that brings? If North can refrain from provocative raises, perhaps EW will, indeed, fall short of the goal.

Lots of decisions to make. Most will do a lot of bidding, benefiting East.

3NT shows various ranges in various methods, usually 25-26. 5NT forces to 6NT and invites 7NT, about 11-12 HCP.

West should feel frisky with the good spade suit, clearly fitting Q, and not 4333 pattern. How often do you bid grand slams? Not often enough to miss and opportunity when presented.

Even with sort of wasted value in the K, this one rolls without breathing hard.

There is no guarantee of finding any value opposite either the K or the KJ, and so East has a real problem in evaluating the prospects.

Real optimists bid game in notrump or spades. I can see making 3NT by winning the K and leading a club. Making ten tricks in spades is a much larger enterprise, and if game is to be bid, 3NT is clearly the easier to make, requiring a trick less.

Contracts all over the place, most Easts being adventurous, mostly rewarded in 3NT.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

   1NT
Pass31Pass3NT
All pass
  1. 3 spades, one heart, 4-5 or 5-4 in the minors, game forcing values.

Many partnerships play 3M over 1NT showing three cards in the other major, a singleton M, and game values, then complain that the bid never comes up. The truth is that the bid comes up with reasonable frequency to keep the convention, but that the partnership misses the opportunity when presented.

The convention works really well when a suit inadequately protected is diagnosed (and advertised!) and a notrump disaster averted -- a singleton opposite xxx or Hxx could prove to be the partnership's Achilles Heel. Averting that problem often gives an opportunity to separate from the field in a productive way.

Here, with two stoppers opposite the singleton, 3NT is the rational choice. 6 makes, but you have to make a good diamond guess to do it.

Shift the king value from hearts to diamonds, and it should be a piece of cake to bid the diamond slam -- bidding the grand slam requires knowing that clubs will produce extra discards. Perhaps if North can be given the chance to make the decision, knowing that diamonds will be trump. .. One way is to set diamonds as trump, ask for key cards, and then for specific kings. that ask serves a dual purpose in asking, but also technically relinquishing captaincy if the grand slam can be visualized. Perhaps so.

This surely must be an easy slam to bid -- West might bid 4NT over 3, but it won't hurt at all to toss a control bid -- 3 -- out there to get reassurance regarding the club suit. East might have bid 4NT after 3, but it can't hurt to continue describing when the club suit is a bit weak, internally.

"Enough!" cries West -- and employs 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood to reach the easy slam. If you don't want to take the club finesse, don't! Toss the 4 on the A and crossruff, employing the power of the high trumps -- but ruff high, and draw no trumps until after the crossruff is complete.
