Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

Borderline opening decision by North, sub-borderline overcall decision by East, and a competitive decision by South will lead to varying results, whoever is the final aggressor loses on this one! The highest contract that can be made is 2 by EW, a contract that absolutely no one will play!

If North does open and East does pass, a reasonable combination of events, South might bid 3, a modernistic treatment that shows a really good six card suit, 9-11 HCP, and no fit for partner. Perfect? Well, not so much when you have lots of losers and a misfit, as here. Assuming that EW take their tricks off the top, the best South can do for the trouble is down two, opposite nothing making for EW. A disaster! Perhaps North should have kept his powder dry, after all.

A hand that most will hope to forget.

Nothing much here for the bidding or play, as eight tricks don't seem hard to gather -- four clubs, one spade, one heart, and three diamonds -- the finesse will have to be taken, or perhaps an endplay will emerge on some lines.

South will lead a heart, and that makes the contract down two --. can anyone blame East for bidding game with such good stoppers and seventeen HCP? All right, the theme of the day is to avoid opening borderline hands (West, we are looking at you), despite the popularity of getting in there early.

Sigh.

OK, this time West's light opener paid off, and almost got the partnership to game despite the strong notrump overcall. Some may actually get to the spade game, but not the majority.

South can see the High Card values for game, and just employs a Western Cue Bid to make the contract from the correct side -- with East on lead, and away from honors. A winning strategy.

North sees no point in dilly-dallying -- slam is unlikely and game almost certain, holding great spades, a singleton in the opponents' suit, and a side ATxx, partner making a takeout double.

Easy for everyone, hopefully, and an almost average board. 5 doubled won't be a bargain sacrifice, and South should be eager to hit that contract with so much defense.

South should take North's 3NT suggestion to heart, avoiding an embarrassing ruffing defense to 4.

Should the spade finesse be taken? When there is more than a two card disparity in a side suit, the general rule is yes. Here there is a five-card disparity between the EW hands in the heart suit. That leaves East with twelve non-heart cards to West's seven. That makes East's holding the Q a 12-7 favorite. And as a bonus, cashing the A first improves the odds to 11-6, almost a 2-1 advantage.

Yes, cash the A and then cross to a club to take the spade finesse to make the contract.

South may overcall earlier than shown, but waiting for the opponents to have a proven fit is safer.
