4All pass

North might think about opening light, but shouldn't with two jacks in short suits and a difficult rebid problem. East opens 2 in second seat which should always be a reasonably solid preempt. South passes and West, knowing that partner should have a decent to good weak 2-bid should jump to 4. Yes, West could ask partner about her hand, but the more information you reveal, the more you run the risk of helping the opponents on lead and play.

South has no great lead options. I would probably try a red suit, although looking at all four hands, I'd lead a black suit. If South does find a trump lead, East has to plan the diamond play carefully. It's best not to waste an entry to play for the K onside. Instead, lead a low diamond at trick two and then the A and another diamond later, using the club entries to win the established trick. This might all be academic as most defenders will either start with a diamond (giving up a lot of tricks) or a heart and heart continuation. This is another deal where you should ignore the double-dummy which requires a club lead to break up entries. The field may only take 9 tricks, but that's likely a result of declarer error rather than the killing lead.

2?

I love deals where any contract and result are possible. I could see East-West reaching 2, 3 or 4. I could see North-South reaching 3 or 4. I could see any of these contracts making or going down, and maybe doubled. Let's jump in with the first decision: should East open 1 or 1. If the diamonds were clubs instead, I'd open 1. However, here there is a decent chance that partner bids 1NT (or the opponents bid to 2 before it gets back to you) and this hand isn't strong enough to reverse so I think it's better to open 1. South passes and West raises to 2. North might choose to get in the action here, even at these colors, with what's called an OBAR bid. OBAR (Opponents Bid and Raise) bids are bids that could be competitive if partner has a lot or just lead directing. Once the opponents have raised a suit to the two-level, 3 will push them up a level (like a direct-seat balancing bid) or possibly help your side buy the auction. East will compete probably, possibly to 4 (All he needs is KJx in spades for game to have play).

The auction will likely dictate the lead, but let's look at the lead/defensive problems faced by South in some number of spades and then by East in some number of hearts. If South makes a normal-looking Q lead, declarer can take 10 tricks. Only the A lead will hold the contract to 9 tricks, but I'm not sure I'd lead that unless partner bid 3 (another win for the overcall). Against 4 or 4x, East will lead the A and face a decision. If partner doubled, it's likely he has tricks somewhere. It might be right to find the killing club shift, but if partner passes 4, it's hard to imagine not cashing another diamond. Now declarer will make 10 tricks by trying to cash the A, playing three rounds of spades (ruffing the third), drawing the last trump and leading a club to the Q. West will be endplayed into leading either a diamond or a club. Deals like this are a lot of fun, unless you wind up on the wrong end of 590 or 790.

1NTAll pass

Here's a deal where I think we'll find some consensus in the auction. South passes and West opens 1. North makes a takeout double and East bids 1. South is relieved to be able to pass and West bids 1NT. North should not be interested in continuing the auction even with a little bit extra. North should know that partner will still have a chance to balance if she has anything worth saying. East also passes and South should also pass with her only points in declarer's club suit.

North leads the K and after that your guess is as good as mine. Declarer probably ducks, but should North continue and set up dummy's spade trick? If she should switch, which suit should she try? Nothing at all is clear and I imagine the play will go differently at each table. South's club position will certainly frustrate declarer who may go down one or scrape by. It's an interesting problem for South if declarer plays a club to the Q and K and later tries a low club from dummy--it's not clear whether or not to split. It makes an interesting case for whether East should bid or not at these colors. Passing risks -90 or -120 but bidding puts -100 on the table. I would bid anyway, but I would be happier to be nonvulnerable.

Pass4All pass

West comes close to an opening bid. Some partnerships are opening all 11 counts, although vulnerability might scare some of them. If you reordered the honors by putting the Q in with the diamonds, I'd be happier. Anyway, I think it's a pass so North gets to open 1NT. South will use Stayman and then bid a game. North will correct to spades, knowing that partner used Stayman for a reason.

The play in 4 is dull. Declarer loses one club, one diamond and one spade trick. If East leads a low diamond and dummy plays low, West's best play is to put in the J. Of course, on this deal, even making the wrong play of the ace doesn't give anything away. Next board. If this doesn't result in 620 at every table, nothing ever will.

4All pass

North passes and East opens 1 with a flat 14-count. South passes and West bids 1 with East rebidding 1NT. People get new minor forcing confused constantly. This is a convention by the responder. I get asked, "but how does the opener know whether responder has four or five hearts?" The answer is that opener doesn't, but it's not their problem. If responder wants to know if opener has three-card support, responder will bid New Minor Forcing to ask. That's exactly what happens here and opener bids 2. West shouldn't offer a choice of games with so much shape, although it might have worked on this deal. .

Against 4, North might lead either a diamond or a spade. Declarer counts her losers and has two spade losers and potentially 2 diamond losers. She can get rid of the spade loser on the AK. If she plays diamonds carefully, she will only lose one diamond trick. On a spade lead declarer wins the lead (or ducks a round, it doesn't really matter) and draws three rounds of trump. Now she cashes the AK to pitch a spade. Lastly declarer leads a LOW diamond towards the AQ. This will result in only one loser against Kx or stiff K onside or Kxx offside. If you lead the J, you'll lose an extra trick.
