The outcome of this auction depends upon South. In third seat it's not unusual to make bizarre bids however South doesn't really have much a suit and her values are in her short suits. We think most Souths will pass quietly.

West will not come into the auction if South passes. Although she has 11 cards in the minors she fears that her opponents control the majors and she doesn't want to give her opponents the opportunity to win the auction and declare in a low level contract.

Should South bid in third seat West will bid an Unusual notrump and her side will declarer in 3.

We expect this deal to be passed out.

East has an easy opening bid. South will overcall and West will show spade support. Some Norths will stretch and show their heart support. Regardless East will bid the spade game as she has an outside five card suit.

The clubs sit favorably and declarer will bring the suit home with one loser. She will lose one club and may not lose a heart. Also declarer may not lose a diamond. East will at some point lead a diamond toward dummy. South must fly with the ace lest she will lose that trick.

If South tries to be clever and starts with the A and continues clubs hoping for a ruff her side will only get two tricks as declarer will win, draw trump and discard a heart on her fifth club.

We see many NS pairs overbidding this deal. North will open, East will jam the auction and South will double as she does not have a bid to make. When the auction gets back to North she may try 2NT.

South with a great supporting hand must decide whether to place the partnership in game. We think most Souths will do so.

East will lead a spade to partner's ace and win the return then clear the suit.

She doesn't know it yet however the J is a magical card as it will give her access to her running spade suit.

North will win the third round of spades and scramble for tricks. She will win three clubs, one spade, two hearts and two diamonds. Her only hope for a ninth trick is in diamonds. Unfortunately for North East holds the jack and her game contract will fail.

East will lead a low spade, her partner's suit giving North her ninth trick. North will win one spade, two hearts, one diamond and five clubs. On the run of the clubs EW will feel some pressure however they should handle it. East can afford to discard two diamonds and one heart. West can discard three hearts and one spade.

South would like to bid 3 however that bid is not forcing and she fears partner may pass.

She holds a strong suit and partner has implied two card support although it is possible that North may hold only one spade.

West's lead will help declarer. If West starts a diamond East will win and return the suit. Declarer now has a parking spot for one of her losing hearts and she can ruff the other one. On a heart lead declarer needs to ruff only one heart. On the lead of a spade or club declarer will have to take the club finesse which works on this layout.

At some tables South will play two rounds of spades before all the trump are drawn. East will ruff in and hold declarer to 11 tricks.

North stretches at her second turn to bid as she does have a nice heart suit. South will not carry on to game.

North most likely must lose one heart so she has nothing to lose in truing the heart finesse. She will get to dummy and finesse the 10. When the finesse works North will lose no hearts. The defense will win two clubs and two diamonds.

All slams are fun!! Even the ones which go down.

East will open and show her values at her second turn. West will show her diamond length. East, with excellent diamond support will bid the slam.

West will win the opening lead, draw trump, unblock clubs, get to dummy to discard her losing spade on dummy's A to make an overtrick.

The question on this deal is whether South will show her heart suit. If she chooses to be silent EW will get to the notrump game. South will lead a low heart and the defense will win the first seven tricks.

The vulnerability suggests that South remain silent. She effectively has five HCPs as the J is of questionable value. Her heart length may prompt her to bid.

If South bids 2 West will come into the auction by showing her clubs and EW will get to the club game. Since the K is onside declarer will make an overtrick.

South has an awkward first bid however since she has a four loser hand we think that 2 serves best.

Depending upon partnership agreement North may show her heart suit immediately. In partnerships where 2 shows a hand with zero to three HCPs, North will bid 2 and later show her hearts. And partnerships who play Kokish as a response to 2 will bid 2NT. This is a long winded way of saying that the auctions will vary at the table.

Regardless, we expect most pairs to get to the diamond slam. Some Souths will opt for the notrump slam however we are concerned with entries to the North hand.

If North is declarer in 6 and East leads a club to start the defense declarer can guarantee her contract by playing low from dummy. She will have three clubs, six diamonds, one hearts and two spades. North does have a play for an overtrick however it risks making the slam. North can win the A, draw trump, play a heart to dummy and continue with the J, taking the ruffing finesse. If East has the K and the 9 drops then she has 13 tricks. The risk is that if West holds the K or the 9 does not fall then declarer will fail in her slam.

If South is declarer she will not be faced with this question as West cannot safely attack the club suit.

Interestingly if West lead a heart, declarer can almost certainly place the K in the East hand. (We almost never lead away from a king against a slam.) However because of a lack of entries to dummy South will have to take the ruffing finesse immediately. She must win the A and advance the J. If East covers she can draw trump and get to dummy to discard her club losers on good hearts. If East follows low declarer advance the 10, the ruffs a heart high establishing the suit in dummy.
