| Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | Pass | 2NT | Pass | 3♥1 | Pass | 3NT2 | All pass | It might seem strange for N/S to be stopping in 3NT and not even exploring slam with 31 HCP between them, but a lot of experts will have the bidding sequence shown available to them. East will be the first with a bidding choice. 1444 hands with extra strength are very awkward to bid, and I think that it would be an almost universal decision to open 2NT among expert players. After all, what is East to bid if they start with a minor and West responds 1♠, as they will on this hand? Rebidding 2NT would lie about both points and distribution. Usually it is better if you have to lie in the bidding to try to lie about only one aspect of your hand. Opening 2NT in the first place lies about distribution, but at least is right on point count, and East does have a stopper in their singleton. West will transfer to ♠s, and most expert pairs will play that East can break the transfer and bid 3NT with a hand that is poor for playing in ♠s. You might be wondering why this is available after a 2NT opener, but why you should never break a transfer after opening 1NT except if you have a very good hand for partner's suit? For one thing, partner is very unlikely to be planning to pass in three of a major after a 2NT and if their hand is that weak, and East has a poor fit for their major, 3NT might well play better anyway. Also, it is more common to be forced to open 2NT with a singleton honor than 1NT. Lastly, East doesn't need 2NT to show a "super accept" of the major, as a 2NT opener will always be able to show a good holding in one of the minors if they are planning to show an excellent hand for partner's major. All of these factors lead to most experts using a bid of 3NT over the major suit transfer to deny an interest in playing in the major. West of course will be happy to play in NT as they have honors in all the other suits. With a known poor fit from East for ♠s, West should also realize that slam is out of reach, and should be willing to play in a quiet 3NT. I wouldn't be surprised if many E/W pairs are not able to bid as shown, and might end up in 4NT or 5♠ looking for a slam. As it happens, the ♠ break insures both that a ♠ contract is not easy to manage, and also that 12 tricks can be made in NT. Let's say South leads a ♦ against 3NT. East can win in hand, cash the ♠ Ace, and see the drop of the King. After knocking out the ♣Ace, declarer will not even need to guess the ♥ Queen, as they can run all their tricks ending in dummy with the ♥King and the opponents will be caught in a double squeeze. There are enough hazards in the bidding, that any pair who play in NT should do well. The worst case scenario for E/W will be if they end up in 5♠ and are unable to properly hand the ♠ break, and lose two ♠ tricks and the ♣Ace.

| Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | | Pass | 1♥ | 1♠ | 3♥1 | Pass | 4♥ | All pass | | | | - "Mixed Raise", 7-9 HCP, four card or longer ♥ support
| E/W will be hard pressed to find their ♠ sacrifice if N/S bid 4♥, as East will never be willing to raise ♠s even at favorable vulnerability. After South opens 1♥, West is much too strong to bid 2♠ and should start with 1♠. North now has a hand what will be familiar to regular readers of my commentary. North has what is known as a "Mixed Raise", a hand with 7-9 HCP, four card support for partner's five card suit and usually with some shortness. In other words a hand that would like to be somewhat preemptive, but is not weak. Mixed Raises come up more often than any other bidding concept during my analysis, and as such, most experts have a way to show a Mixed Raise in almost all bidding sequences. Here, many will give up a weak raise to 3♥ to show a Mixed Raise instead. Others might play that bidding 3♦ (a "one under" jump shift) would show a Mixed Raise. If you don't have Mixed Raise available, you are really stuck for a bid, as a 2♠ bid to show a limit raise overstates the HCP and defensive potential of the North hand, and neither a standard 2♥ raise or a weak 3♥ raise are right either way. In any case, South has an easy raise to game opposite a Mixed Raise. West will suspect that a ♠ sacrifice might be right at this vulnerability, and given their good ♠ spots, might well bid it. I would be much happier with the West hand, if I had the ♦Jack, and I suspect most will just pass, even though I think bidding 4♠ is a reasonable shot at matchpoints. On a ♦ lead, the defense against 4♥ will be easy, as their will be three tricks set up immediately. However, on a really bad day for West, if they never lead ♦s, declarer can run all their tricks ending up in dummy with the last ♣, and West will find themselves in an unfortunate squeeze, as East cannot protect against the ♠8. I expect +620 to be a very common score for N/S.

| Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | | | 1♥ | Pass | 1♠ | Pass | 1NT | Pass | 3NT | All pass | | I can't bear to actually put down a bidding sequence that fails to open a five card major, but I'm sorely tempted with the South hand. It's not at all clear that South should want to play in ♥s if their side has only a 5-3 fit (if North has 4+ ♥s, the ♥ should be found anyway.) Sometimes it's better to treat a poor five card suit in an otherwise balanced hand as a four card suit. The South hand certainly looks like it wants to play NT to me and I wouldn't fault anyone for opening 1♣. The rest of the bidding might well be exactly the same even if South decides to open 1♣. I expect South to be declarer in 3NT at most of the tables no matter what they choose initially. Assuming West leads a ♦, declarer should win, and as long as they are careful to start the ♣ suit with a ♣ to the Jack and a ♣ to the Queen, will see the bad ♣ break and have a marked finesse against the 10. If the East and West ♥ suits were reversed, the defense would be able to cash four ♥ tricks when in with the ♣Ace, but as it is, only three ♥ tricks can be cashed, and declarer will have nine top tricks as soon as they get back in. As long as declarer doesn't take an unwise ♠ finesse, +400 should be a common result for N/S, although some will go down after mismanaging the ♣ suit, or trying for an extra trick in ♠s. Overtricks should be very rare.

| Kenny Horneman Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | 1♥ | Pass | 1♠ | Pass | 2♥ | All pass | | | Yes, it's matchpoints, and yes, South has 15 HCP, but sometimes you just have to pass even if you feel you have the best hand at the table. Some pairs might be tempted to bid 1NT after E/W start with 1♥-1♠, but South has a bare minimum, 4333 distribution, no source of tricks, and is facing a partner who almost certainly has the weakest hand at the table. When 2♥ comes back around to South, some would be tempted to double. However, E/W don't necessarily have a fit, which means neither do N/S. If West had bid 2♠, and this had come back to South, it would be more reasonable to double, as E/W would have ostensibly found a fit, and therefore, N/S are much more likely to have a fit as well. Given that N/S are vulnerable, it certainly looks best for South to just pass. As it happens, West might compete to 3♥ anyway, and with no way to go wrong in the ♥ suit and the ♦Ace onside, West will always have just two ♥ losers, one ♦ loser and one ♠ loser. Sloppy defense may even set up the ♦Jack, or allow declarer to score an extra ♠ trick at the end. +140 should be the most common score for E/W, with a few +170 scores scattered throughout as well.
