3All pass

There are several possible final contracts on this deal, all of which are reasonable. EW may declarer n some number of clubs. NS may declarer in spades or hearts.

(A thought about North's pass over the double. While it is tempting to bid 2, there is something to be said for passing quietly. West's double suggests a heart holding. A redouble promises 10+ HCPs and a bid of 2 promises 10 points as it's at the two level. North has a tolerance for spades and if West does have hearts then North's cards are working.)

If NS win the auction they have the obvious winners. Perhaps it's better stated that their side has five or six losers depending upon the opening lead. If North declarers, East will lead her partner's suit, clubs and the defense will win two clubs, one spade, one heart and two diamonds. If West makes the opening lead then the defense will only win one club trick.

Slightly more interesting is the play if EW declare. It appears that the defense can win six tricks however that is an illusion as North will be endplayed in the endgame.

Watch as the deal develops. NS will cash two spades and North will ruff a spade (declarer discarding a heart from dummy.) Now North can exit a heart. Declarer will win and and return a heart. North will win. This time she can exit a diamond. Declarer will cash her two top diamonds and exit a diamond. If North wins she must return a heart or a diamond. If she returns a heart declarer can ruff in dummy and take the club finesse. If North returns a diamond declarer will either win in dummy or overruff South. In case of the latter she will drop South's K.

South can take the pressure off North by ruffing the third diamond however declarer will now capture South's K.

South must lead a club early in the proceedings lest declarer will make her contract. We expect South to lead a high diamond. North should discourage in an effort to convince South to switch to a club. If South continues diamonds declarer will make her contract as she will score one diamond, one club, four spades and three hearts.

Look at what happens if South switches to a club. (Note that this is not an obvious switch.) If declarer plays the 10 North will win the jack and clear the suit. She has the A as an entry. If declarer plays a high club North should encourage in the suit. When South next gains the lead a club return will allow North to score four club tricks.

It's interesting to note that East must decide whether to cash out for down one when she wins her club trick.

Play of this slam is easy for declarer. She will win the lead, draw trump and establish one club trick. She has 12 tricks whether in spades or notrump.

The auction is the awkward problem on this layout. East takes a view and upgrades her hand slightly. She doesn't have 18 - 19 HCPs as she promises with her 3 bid however she does have a second suit and no spade losers if declaring in hearts. That her singleton is in partner's suit may not be an asset.

West sets hearts as trump and after East bids the heart game tries 4. That clearly is not to play but is an expression of slam interest. East is only too happy to oblige and bids the heart slam to protect her holding in diamonds and clubs.

Many Norths will open 2NT to get the value of their hand on the table. South will transfer and offer a choice of games. With three hearts, North will elect to play the heart game.

Declarer must lose the obvious three heart tricks. She will either take a diamond finesse or attempt to ruff two diamonds in dummy. Declarer can discard a diamond from the South hand on her high clubs.

Many mistakenly think that North's 2 rebid promises a sixth heart. North has no other bid available to her. So 2 is a default bid showing a minimum opener. North is not strong enough to bid 3 as this is a high level reverse and promises a hand worth 17 HCPs.

The defense will win one club and two hearts on this layout. Declarer cannot prevent East from winning two heart tricks regardless how she plays the suit.

East will open and South will bid 2 promising at least 10 HCPs. She has already passed so East knows that West does not have a full opener.

East will bid the spade game as she has an excellent suit.

East will lose one spade, one heart and one club. On this layout there is no wrong way to play the clubs,

West will open and East will show a Limit Raise according to partnership agreement. Some partnerships use Drury for fourth seat openers.

Regardless West will end in the spade game.

The defense will win one spade trick. The fall of the 9 from the South hand solidifies the suit for declarer. She will lose one club as well.

Declarer will ruff one club in dummy

East will transfer and offer partner a choice of games. This is an easy decision for West and she opts for the spade game.

If North leads a high club declarer will win, draw trump and concede a club. The best the defense can do is to win one more diamond trick. Declarer can discard dummy's losing diamond on her long heart.

Obviously North will not lead a diamond from her holding. If she leads a heart or a spade declarer will win, draw trump, cash three top hearts ending in her hand and lead a club to the J. North will win the trick and must either return a club or a diamond, either of which solves the suit for declarer who will make 11 tricks on this deal.

West will jam the auction, unfortunately keeping her partner silent.

North will lead her singleton spade. Declarer will try the finesse as the 2 does not look like a singleton. South will win and return a spade for North to ruff. North will exit a club. Declarer will win in dummy to lead a heart toward her hand. South will rise with the ace and attempt to give North another ruff.

Declarer will ruff with the 10, draw trump. West must still lose one club and two diamonds. This is not a pretty result for EW.

A few boards ago West struggled in her contract. The bridge gods deem to return the favor and give South a difficult time.

West will lead a diamond. Declarer will naturally take the finesse. East will win her K, cash the A and play a second heart. The defense will win the first four tricks. West still has one spade and two clubs coming to her.

Note that some Souths may manage to avoid losing two clubs by establishing dummy's diamonds for discards. East can prevent this from happening by ruffing the third heart and playing a club.
