North opens 1 with a hand that is textbook for an 11-count opening (ace, ace-king plus a five-card suit means this has extras even). East will overcall 1 and South might foresee trouble and try 1NT, but with a singleton it's probably better to make a Negative Double and hope to find hearts. West passes and North is stuck for a bid. I would rebid 2 and hope for the best. East comes to the rescue in the form of a 2 call. Normally low-level doubles are just "card-showing" but here, South has already indicated the only unbid suit. It feels more penalty-ish, although North could pull with extra shape. West hates the way this auction has proceeded, but passes to take a preference for diamonds. North doesn't have extra shape so she should pass. East also should respect that partner could have bid 2 on her own.

If you asked my father, he'd say that when playing doubled part-scores you should close your eyes and lead a trump. On this hand, he'd do just fine (that's how you wind up in the hall-of-fame) although most of us would be afraid that partner might have a singleton diamond. Mere mortals might lead the 6, but North should switch to a trump looking at that dummy. North also should know to win the first heart trick later on thanks to the Negative Double. Remembering the auction will always help with your defense. Here you might not get the maximum penalty, but down two should be pretty good.

East passes and then South makes a slight overbid with 3. The suit is almost good enough to support this and the Q might be useful, but 7-2-2-2 is the worst shape to have a 7-card suit since it has so may losers. West also makes an overbid with a 4 call. Jumping after an opponent preempts shows a strong hand, and West is fairly strong. North should hope to beat this rather than look for a good spot of her own and pass. Everyone else should also pass.

North probably leads her partner's suit, although the K also looks promising. On a diamond lead, there's no play at all. On a heart lead, declarer should ruff the second heart with the 10 and cash the A and K. She should then play a low spade to dummy's 5 and play a club to the J. If North now cashes the A-- a terrible play--declarer will make. Why am I even writing about a terrible play? Because I see this happen too often. Players worry that their aces might disappear even though the dummy offers no hope for declarer. North should win the club and then play the K. Now the defense will take one heart, one diamond, and two clubs.

A deal with a very normal auction and perhaps unusual results. West will open 1NT and East will likely use Stayman (or Puppet Stayman ) and direct the contract to 4.

North faces an interesting lead problem. My instinct was to lead the J, though a club lead also looks mostly harmless. Let's say the 6 is led. Declarer should play the 9 or 10 to make a cover look like a better proposition. Should South fall for it? NO! What benefit can come from covering? Partner can't hold the J (the 6 is either a singleton or 6-4 doubleton) so why waste an honor? If you cover, declarer will lose two diamonds and a heart (pitching two spades and ruffing the third round). If you don't cover, declarer would have to see through the back of the cards to make.

If, instead, we switch to my instinctive lead--the J, declarer now has much more to go on. The name of this game is "avoidance". Declarer wants to avoid South leading a diamond through. so declarer can win the lead with the K and take a heart finesse. If North returns a spade, declarer wins in dummy, draws two rounds of trump and plays a spade. If North wins, he's stuck again playing a spade for declarer (or making life easy with a diamond or club). On a spade, declarer pitches a diamond and now plays the A and K and takes a ruffing finesse in clubs to make her contract. The moral of the story: don't come to me for opening lead advice.

West opens 1, East responds 1, choosing to bypass 1 with only one bid to make on the auction. West will raise to 2 and neither North nor South has the ability to get in to raise the level. I hate letting my opponents play in a major-suit fit on the two-level but here the vulnerability would stop me. Not to mention that South has too many clubs to think that balancing is a good idea. East should not bid beyond 2 with 10 points, by the way. If West had more than 14 points, she would have rebid more than 2.

South has to lead something and with length in dummy's shown suit, a trump lead seems best. The play can get complicated, but likely ends with the defense taking one spade, one heart, and two clubs for -140 North-South.

This is a tough bidding problem. East will open 1 and West bids a game-forcing 2. Now East can bid 3 to show some of her shape. West likely repeats diamonds and now East is stuck. 3 here is a stall and could be a variety of hands, including the one here with a heart fragment. West shows a heart stopper with 3NT. It's hard to see East stopping there. West might now bid 4NT to invite, and should West bid 6NT? West should bid some slam opposite an invitation. Maybe it's worthwhile to try 6 on the way? 6 would certainly be the big winner, but it's not at all clear and matchpoints tends to reward closing your eyes and bidding notrump.

Against some level of notrump by West, North should lead a heart (leading a spade seems pointless on the auction). This will effectively limit the E-W pair to 9 tricks. If E-W finds 6 the play is also straightforward. Declarer wins the heart lead and plays the A followed by two rounds of spades, pitching a heart. Now declarer ruffs a heart back to hand and draws the remaining trump. No finesses necessary as declarer takes the club with the A and discards the remaining clubs on the good spades.
