  1. weak jump overcall

double dummy East/West have a 9-card fit in diamonds and with singletons in spades, hearts and clubs, the partnership can make 5, but getting to 5 with only 18 high card points combined will be hard. Even though North will have a tough rebid problem if responder bids 1, under new ACBL opening hand guidelines (Open Chart) North should open the bidding 1 on this deal.

Auction: North deals and with 11 hcp (all working points) 8 looses and a Rule of 19 hand opens the bidding 1. With a 6-5 hand most will take some action with East hand, with just 8 hcp it is a hard hand to show both spades and diamonds in one competitive bid if East overcalls 1 East will not have the values to rebid diamonds. In the auction here, East overcalls 2 as a weak Jump Shift South raises to 3. With East bid of 2, it is really hard for West to get into the auction and passes and North passes.

Play: Some might have East lead the singleton 8, but the K looks like the right lead. As long as East does not lead the 10 everything is ok. This deal could be played out any number of ways, but the important issue is that since East has long spades, consider West to have long hearts and finesse West for the heart queen.

  1. forcing raise in diamonds

This is a really hard auction to predict. East should open 1 and South should overcall 2, after that it depends on what West does. If West makes a weak jump to 3 then East/West with favorable vulnerability (white vs. red) could easily reach 5x.

Auction: East deals and with 13 high card points and 5½ losers opens the bidding 1. South with 12 hcp and 7 losers overcalls 2. In the auction here, West passes (see comments above) North bids 2 as a forcing raise in diamonds. East could bid 3 which would change the auction, but here East doubles 2. South bids 3 (shape) and North bids 3. East makes a control bid of 3 and North bids 5.

Play: West on opening lead dutifully leads 3 on opening lead. Many might with KQ7 in dummy consider ducking the first heart, but if partner had the J declarer (South) would not duck, so East rises with the A and cashes the K. After this it is easy for South to cash out putting a spade and a club on the KQ and ruffing clubs.

  1. Negative Double

Here is another tempting slam where shortness creates values, but in partner's bid suit.

Auction: North deals and with 12 high card points and 6 losers opens the bidding 1. East overcalls 2 and South makes a Negative Double. North bids 2 and South makes an attempt to get to slam with 3. North bids 4 and while South with 21 support points for spades would like to go to slam the void in diamond is in partner's bid suit, and thus, South bids 4.

I see double dummy this will make 6 but off two keycards making 6 requires finding the K onside.

Auction: East with 13 high card points and 6 losers opens the bidding 1. North/South are silent throughout. West bids 1 and East raises to 2. If West makes any bid other than 4, East will be excited about slam possibilities. But West with 12 hcp and 14 support points (i.e. no extra values) bids 4.

Play: North on opening lead does not want to lead the K or lead away from either the K or A so leads the 9. It might be possible for some pairs to lead the Q from dummy and if South does not cover to play the A dropping the K, but most pairs will probably just make 5.

Here is another tempting slam but it depends on shortness.

Auction: West opens the bidding 1 and North overcalls 1. East bids 2 and West makes a jump raise to 4. In my systems 4 would be Roman Keycard Minorwood but for most 4 shows support and good values. East with shortness has a good hand but East's shortness is in partner's bid suit, and East has two dead spades (the opponents' bid suit) so East just bid's 5.

Made 7 — NS −440

Play: The down side to making overcalls with bad suits and good hands is partner will not know what to lead. Here South dutifully leads the 10 and after pulling trump pitches a heart on spades. The hearts set up to pitch a club and ruff 2 clubs, making 7.
