Ok, yes, I know, it's a long, complicated, expert only bidding sequence, but you have to indulge your analyst sometimes when he likes to get into some bidding theory. Although I think an expert partnership might sniff at a grand slam on this hand, such as on the bidding shown, the reality is that just getting to a small slam will be a challenge for most pairs, and 6 will be a well above average contract for those who bid it. In fact, if you don't have the tools to find a minor suit slam, it is often better to play in 3NT, as it will score better on many hands than a minor suit game. On the actual hand, as declarer has good chances to make all 13 tricks with careful play in s, a 5 contract may work out well, as there are only 10 tricks available in a NT contract unless the defense errs.

After East opens 1 and West responds 1, East will have to decide whether to bid 1 or 2. With such good distribution, bidding a game forcing 2 isn't a bad choice on values, but it takes up a lot of space, and it will be hard for East to show their extra length without the bidding getting high. I wouldn't want to be at 3 without knowing what suit is going to be trump. I think this hand is easier to bid by rebidding 1, which is forcing for most partnerships, planning to bid 2 next, which is also basically forcing as long as West has a fit for one of East's suits. As it happens, if the E/W agreement is that a 1 rebid always promises at least five s (a common expert agreement), West will know they have a great hand for s and can force to game, but even if they don't know this, they might force game anyway. In the worst case scenario that West bids only 3 over 1, I think East will still be able to drive to slam.

A contract can always make all 13 tricks as long as declarer gets three ruffs and pulls a round of trump with dummy's trumps, but declarer may have to guess at the end which red suit to ruff back to their hand. Declarer should always make 12 tricks, and the overtrick will only be important to pairs who are playing 5, as 6 will be a good score regardless of how many tricks are made.

Not everyone will overcall 1 with the South hand, holding a "Swiss cheese" suit, at unfavorable vulnerability, but E/W should be able to get to their game even in the face of N/S interference. If South doesn't bid at all, E/W will have no difficulties bidding 4, but if South bids 1, West can start with a double. As responder, doubling and then bidding a suit shows a long suit with a hand too weak to bid a new suit at the two level initially, which typically promises 10+ HCP. Note that this is the opposite of doubling when the opponents when your partner hasn't bid and then bidding a new suit next, which shows a strong hand. The key to remember is that when your partner has opened and the opponents have overcalled at the one level, then doubling and later bidding a new suit underneath the opponents suit shows a weak hand. West is planning to bid s at their next chance, but East will preempt that by showing up with a full four card fit and a good hand, jumping to 4 at their next chance to bid.

South has no good lead against 4. A lead will let declarer play the Queen and later pitch a on a high . On any other lead, declarer can win, pull trump and lead a towards the KQ. If North ducks, the defense won't get a trick and declarer can lead towards the Queen later. If North goes up with the Ace, it's no better, as declarer will now have two winners to pitch the losers in the West hand, and the defense won't score a trick. For those who care, this is known as a "Morton's Fork Coup". If West is declarer in a contract North will have to lead a on opening lead, otherwise the same analysis applies. +450 will certainly be the most common score by far for E/W.

  1. Four card support, game forcing
  2. Minimum

E/W should have not problems getting to 4 on this hand, and it's hard to see how declarer will make anything other than 10 tricks. After West opens 1, most E/W pairs will be playing the "Jacoby 2NT" convention to show a four card game forcing raise by East. Whatever the E/W agreements, after East forces to game, West should show a minimum hand, and that should be enough for East to give up on slam. Any East player who gets pushy and decides to make one more for slam will be overbidding and will be punished severely for it, as there just isn't any reasonable way for West to make 11 tricks, and the vast majority of the field will be quietly going +620 with the E/W cards.

  1. Transfer

With the suit perfect and a normal trump break, the N/S hands can make 10 tricks in s, but I don't expect many pairs to bid game and it isn't really a very good game to be in either. Assuming West leads a high , I expect South to win and then play on s to get a ruff before pulling trump. If South just pulls trump right away, then they are likely to lose two s, two s and might even get tapped out to lose another trick at the end. Assuming declarer gets their ruff, then they will be assured of nine tricks, and will make ten if they can score a long trick.

However, the hand can be much more interesting than this. A good case can be made for declarer to duck the opening lead. With a singleton in dummy, few defenders will assume declarer has the Ace when they duck the first trick, and declarer can even play the 4 to help make it look like East has encouraged the opening lead. If West continues s, declarer can now cash two s, pitching two s from dummy and no longer has to try to play for the suit to break 3-3. Careful play will now see declarer home with ten tricks, losing one trick in each side suit. Note that even if West is suspicious and switches to a , declarer will still make 10 tricks if they are careful. East can win and continue s. Declarer wins King, cashes the Ace pitching a and ruffs a . Noting the fall of the Q declarer can now lead a to the Ace and then the Jack. West has to ruff, and declarer overruffs, leads a to the King, pulling the last trump, and can now cash their long to pitch their last loser. A ruff completes this fine line of play, bringing home 10 tricks.
